  1. There were captions included in these photos descripting what the various photos were about. One of the amazing parts of this story is the vast amount of work accomplished so far as this is just the 13th week into the reimagine the Harsens Island Schoolhouse into the Harsens Island Schoolhouse Grille.
My understanding is that there was at one time long ago a set of stairs in the back that led to the rooftop where what was probably one of the first green roofs were used as part of the curriculum at the school. At that time students learned there how to raise gardens in containers.
In Talking with Kristen Bane, who along with her husband Tony I've learned that they are very much open to continuing using the restaurant as a place of learning and have great plans to realize such an endeavor. One of ways they have started to do this is that they are composting and making a garden out back, the monkey bars are right in the middle of the garden and will be the new home of the tomatoe climb.
This is such a great endeavor as it is truly a gathering place where old friends meet. Some of whom went to school here when it opened back in 1934.There is a young man of about 12 years old who is considering to make a documentary that would interview many Islanders, current and former to tell their stories of their Island Schoolhouse experience. A good place to start from as it continues to enrich Island life in many more ways than just the great food that is created in the kitchen and served so well by the professional and very pleasant staff who now work there.
I even ran into a fellow I worked with at the old Detroit Broach yesterday as he was eating dinner with his family there. It had been 30 years since we last saw each other at
"The Broach" So Yes I can truly attest to this being the place where "Friend Meet".We hope tomeet you there sometime soon and share a cup of that great coffee.
    Sincerely,
